Late Summer Harvest at the Garden

There’s a lot happening at the Mantua Urban Peace Garden!

Our loofa is flowering and fruiting, python beans are starting to show, blackberries are coming in, and we’ve harvested corn, watermelon, tomatoes, okra, beets, turnips, collards, and Swiss chard.

We’re also working to keep harlequin beetles at bay and protect our growing plants.

Our flax plants have also been pulled and laid out to ret, a process that uses moisture and microorganisms to break down the plant tissue so the usable flax fibers can be separated from the woody stalks. This process takes about two to four weeks, so the flax will remain undisturbed while it rets.
